Ikea? - What's happening? and Going to Vermont - Leaf Peeping and Need a Writer's Break

Thank you for your comments about my Best Buy experience. I'd like to say your comments about your frustrating experiences at Best Buy lifted spirits - misery loves company and all that - but what a sad indictment that so many people in such a wide area have such a negative impression of Best Buy.  Surely, Best Buy must know they're not exactly loved?

Okay, moving along - the other day, I decided to finally use the duvet and pillow covers I'd purchased in South Africa some years ago.

So, I put the folded pillow casing into my purse and went to Ikea, for the European-style pillow match.  A saleslady offered to help me.  Hmmm, I thought, very nice.  We walked to the pillow section.  She took one look at my pillow cover and informed me that the only available size would be two inches too big and wouldn't work.

I knew, from my sewing days, that the cover is usually two inches wider than the pillow to accommodate a pillow's fluff.  She didn't agree with that info, very politely offered, and didn't want to unhook the sample pillow for me to test, insisting that the cover would be too big and would look awful.

I politely said that the pillow was decorative and that it didn't matter if the casing were a bit large.  She dug in, no she didn't want to unhook the sample pillow for me to test the cover, all a waste of time, she said, starting to walk away.

So, me being me, I asked for the ladder to get the pillow down.  I guess the look on my face said I'd get the manager because she agreed to unhook the sample pillow.

The sample pillow fit into my cover perfectly!  Sold, I said, reaching into the bin for a pillow to purchase.

On the way home, I couldn't help but wonder why a $6.99 purchase had been so difficult and so counter-image my previous trips there.  Am I on a Bad News Bear roll?  Gosh, I hope not!

Anyway, since hub has a long business trip coming up, we decided to take some Us Time and drive to Vermont (from Virginia) simply to enjoy the leaves and pancakes and maple syrup at mom and pop places.  It was on the national news that the large majority of the roads affected by the deluge have been repaired.  But there are very few tourists.  Hub's from New Hampshire and feels for his neighbors.  I'm from Louisiana and am grateful for those who trekked to post-Katrina New Orleans to help.

I also need a writer's break.  Without going into boring detail, it wasn't until this weekend my mojo returned.  I zipped through edits for my Christmas story, "Remy Broussard's Christmas" because I could finally hear my writer's voice.  (I know this sounds odd, but it's the only explanation I have.)

I feel as though I can leave Remy for a few days and he'll be just fine upon my return.  Wow, what a relief...finally!

So, we're leaving early in the morning, returning Sunday.  Can't wait to see those bright leaves and hike a few trails (for fun and to work off that maple syrup!)  I'll take some pics to share!

It doesn't sound odd, at all. Have a thoroughly enjoyable time.

The American work ethic is pathetically lacking nowadays. Kinda sad.

Enjoy your break. They work wonders for a writer! And thanks for dropping by and commenting today!

It probably makes more sense to shop with the independent shops then the big box stores anyway.

Have fun with the leaves! They're in that phase here in eastern Ontario and western Quebec, and looking good.

A drive from Virginia to Vermont sounds absolutely delightful this time of year! My husband and I were wishing we could drive to Vermont as well. It's on our wish list of fall road trips.

What is wrong with the sales help these days?! I mean, seriously, what else did the woman have to do anyway? It was her job to SELL you the damn pillow. I would have loved to see the look on her face when you proved yourself right. I swear, this is part of what is driving people to shop online. Me included.

One of these days I'm going to go to New Hampshire and Maine, my birthplace. I've longed to see the fall colors and the area where my parents first became...parents. :) Sounds like a lovely trip, Kittie. Glad you got your writer's voice back.

Ooh have fun!!! I'm leaving for Colorado on Wednesday, then Tennessee next week. I can't wait to see all the golden aspens and then the colors of the Smokey Mountains...never been there before. And now I'm on a mission to have pancakes and maple syrup everywhere I go.

I'm glad you're able to get away, Kittie. Can't wait to read your post about the trip. We're off to New Brunswick to meet a new grandbaby.

Thank you for following me! I don't know why, but salespeople scare me. I'd have agreed and then asked someone who didn't smile and try to sell things to me for help. My dog's name is Remy. Hehe, random fact.

I hope you're having a wonderful time! I do have a good Best Buy story - my husband went there to buy me an inexpensive digital camera after mine died, was just going to get me the same model, and a Best Buy guy steered him to a much better model in the same price range---I LOVE that thing! Such a nice little camera and SO much better than what I'd had before for the same price. So, it was nice to see a employee know his stuff & help a customer out for a low-ticket item. :)

I'm completely baffled by the Ikea employee. The only thing I can think of is that she didn't want to climb up the ladder.

Hey Kittie! Thanks for joining the support group. I look forward to your first post.

LOL. People are funny. Sometimes I wonder what really motivates them--because "I" never do ANYTHING silly or stupid or embarrassing. =)

Have a great trip! I'll be in envy the whole time. There is no Fall in Florida. *sigh*

lovely- enjoy that trip to VT (and your Ikea story just sounds crazy! Why is it so hard to get help at a store?)

Hi Kittie, I linked over here per the recommendation on Shannon/Green Monkey's blog. I've been to Ikea so many times, and no one has ever approached me with offers of assistance. Based on your experience, I guess I'm glad that hasn't happened. The saleslady in question seems to need to learn a thing or two about sales! You live in VA? I was just there, visiting my mom in the Shen Valley. Happy travels, and nice to meet you!
